Beginning your dance journey should be a fun and exciting experience. Maybe it’s your first time taking dance classes, or perhaps you enjoyed lessons long ago. No matter what brings you to our studio, Arthur Murray Dance Center Whitefish Bay provides a welcoming place to learn the fundamentals of social dancing, or competitive dancing if you prefer, in a supportive environment. If you have questions about your first class, here’s a quick look at what to expect.
A Warm Welcome
Our team of friendly instructors will welcome you with open arms and make you feel right at home in our beautiful studio. You will have a chance to sit down with a team leader to talk about your dance goals. This is also a good time to discuss your availability for lessons and any important dates, such as an upcoming engagement or anniversary party, a wedding, or other events you might want to dance at. Next, it’s on to the dance floor.
Start Dancing Right Away
Your Certified Arthur Murray® Instructor will have you on the dance floor and learning steps almost immediately. All of our instructors receive extensive training to provide you with the best lessons possible. Your teacher will work closely with you to develop a personalized program that addresses your goals and tracks your progress.
Some students come to our studio with a special dance in mind, while others want to be more active, make friends, and have fun. If you’re not sure where to begin, your instructor can guide you toward the dances we teach that are most appropriate for you. Whether you’re getting ready for the first dance at your wedding or love Latin music and want to dance at local clubs, we will make your goals a reality. For those beyond the beginner level, the introductory lesson allows you to showcase your current skills. This will help your instructor determine which level of our Medalist Program is most appropriate for you.
Remember to Have Fun
It’s normal to feel nervous before your first dance lesson, especially if you’ve never danced before. If you and your partner have the jitters, just remember that your instructor is there to help – and they are experts with beginners. Almost everyone experiences missteps or awkward movements during their first lessons, but you’ll feel more comfortable and confident every time you practice. Even the best professional dancers were once beginners, and all that matters is that you have fun and enjoy dancing.
Wear comfortable clothes that let you move easily during your lesson, like yoga pants or a skirt for women and a shirt and slacks for men. Good-quality, smooth-soled shoes will help you glide across the floor, but sneakers may be hard to move in. If you’re preparing for a special event, bring the shoes you’ll wear that day. It’s also wise to have a light meal or snack and stay hydrated before your lesson so you feel energized and ready to learn. Finally, take a deep breath and let yourself relax – every lesson offers a new chance to improve and enjoy the experience of dancing.
